Lady Duff-Gordon, the fashion designer who survived the Titanic
If I say “Lucile”, what comes to your mind?
A great, almost forgotten fashion designer, who had reigned for about thirty years in fashion system, from 1890 to 1920, creating Lucile Ltd, with salons in London, Paris and New York.
Yet, only a “small” detail of her life is often remembered: she was among the few survivors of the Titanic!
Let’s go in order: Lucy Christiana Duff-Gordon (1863-1935), commonly known as Lady Duff-Gordon, was born in London on June 13, 1863.
Born Lucy Christiana Sutherland, she apparently hated her first name (although extended to “Lucile “was destined to become famous as the name of her fashion company) and her close friends seem to have called her Christiana.
Lucy became Mrs.
James Wallace at her first marriage in 1884 and Lady Duff-Gordon at her second marriage in 1900.
